Mother-Daughter Cruise: Chillin’ on the Sea

I have always looked forward to summer vacations, any Holiday or as a matter-of-fact anything that would afford me time off from work! Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am a very hard worker and give 100 percent plus! As a single mom raising two sometimes three kids, I really looked forward to spending fun time with my family and myself ... getting away from the usual routine of life. Vacations rejuvenated me and made me a more pleasant person to be around! I saved my vacation days and planned for yearly vacations that lasted anywhere from two to four weeks. I felt I was very clever and extremely creative with my vacation/holiday choices.

So why did I just now have the vacation of a lifetime? And why oh why had I not considered going on a cruise before now? Could it be because I’m deathly afraid of water (nearly drowned as a child) and riding the high seas sounds a lot like “ugh” to me and not fun? Whatever the reason, I never ever considered going on a cruise.

My daughter’s husband treated us to a seven-day Mexican Riviera Cruise. He felt we could use a mother/daughter get-a-way. He is perceptive like that! So for months I was very anxious, actually getting a little queasy whenever I thought about it. So I did what I can do best—ignore what makes me uncomfortable!

Time up, the day has finally arrived for our bon voyage. Everything went smoothly, and I mean everything. Flight into California great. Boarding ship great. Nerves great.

I boarded a “fun” ship and was ready for the “drink of the day” with that cute little umbrella in it! I walked right up and got a plate full of food and lounged on the “lido” deck, sipping and listening to music. Mmmm, a huge floating hotel! What a concept! 3000-plus travelers of all ethnic backgrounds, age groups, and relationship status. All here with the same purpose in mind ... have fun, relax, enjoy, eat and no worries about driving, cooking, cleaning, washing, or planning what to do! 2000-plus staff to guarantee we would have a grand time.

Everything and I mean everything is planned for you! You only have to arrive on time to participate in any activity. The service was very personable from the wait staff to the room steward, we were made to feel special. Customer service was outstanding and to our surprise, we were always addressed by our first names. I loved the mints and towel animals left on our bed nightly.

Because my husband Alex was on an aircraft carrier, the idea of a cruise turns him off. Most of my friends would agree with you! I love this story and living vicariously through your wonderful descriptions! Bon Voyage!
