Wet and Wild: Fifteen Fabulous Fountains

“Three coins in a fountain …” goes the famous song, and anyone who’s ever visited Rome, Paris, or just about any other ancient city knows that if you tried to fill each fountain in town, you’d end up a beggar. On your next trip abroad, these amazing feats of aqua-tecture are worth tossing a few pennies into.

Fontana di Trevi, Rome, Italy

One of the most famous fountains in the world, the Trevi was completed in 1762 and is the largest baroque fountain in the Eternal City. Legend has it that if you toss a coin into the fountain, you will someday return to Rome; about 3,000 euro are collected from the basin each day.

The Tap Fountain in Spain is fantastic. I love it when artists/architects incorporate a sense of play in their work; art should be run, right? Great slideshow!
I know it's a travel cliche to be bored by all the fountains in European cities, but I love it! I love art and architecture, and I just can't get enough of them.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've never seen a single one of these fountains. The shame! I obviously need to take a ’round-the-world expedition, STAT.

I've seen the Trevi fountain in person and it was absolutely gorgeous, though crowded with tourists. I don't remember if I threw any change into it, though. I wonder what they do with the 3,000 euro?
