Utopia in Decay: The Monuments of Yugoslavia

Photographer Jan Kempenaers’ latest, Spomenik: The End of History, studies the bizarre statues of post-war Yugoslavia.

Spomenik, The End of History

Symbolizing the utopian vision of the former Yugoslavia, these Communist-era statues represented vision and hope toward the future. Now in a state of decay, the statues have come to symbolize a lost era of Communist regime.

Also, picture # 3 is Monument in Jasenovac. This was the largest extermination camp in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) and occupied Yugoslavia during World War II. The camp was established by the Ustaše (Ustasha) regime in August 1941 and dismantled in April 1945. In Jasenovac, the largest number of victims were ethnic Serbs, the camp also held Jews and Roma.

"Bizarre statues"? I don't think these are bizarre statues for anyone who knows a bit of history about this region. For example picture #7 is monument honoring victims on Kozara. Its honoring people who were killed by German and Croatian Nazis in part of Western Bosnia during 1942. As you can imagine most of these post war monuments are honoring victims of WWII.

I enjoyed your photos although it would have been nice if you marked their names and locations for people who do not know. Thanks much.
