You've Probably Never Heard of California's Third Largest City

I’m a huge fan of virtual tourism using Google Maps, and every so often, I come across something haunting or unusual. Today I came across California City, CA,  an eerie image of American idealism that never got off the ground.

Incorporated in 1965, it was a massive exercise in real estate speculation and growth. Spanning over 203 square miles (double the size of the capitol city, Sacramento), California City was to be a giant oasis in the Mojave Desert. It’s technically the third largest city in California and the eleventh largest in the country. However, it ended up a desolate and unfulfilled dream.

Scrolling around the embedded map below shows a massive skeleton of streets, cul-de-sacs, and parks. The city was to have been built around a central park with a twenty-six-acre artificial lake. This article from the LA Times in 1990 explains the history of the ghost city in the desert. Source: DailyMeh.

Cerro Coso Community College College just announced (Oct 10,2009) that they just purchased 22 acres in the center of California City to build a new college. Maybe the dream is starting to happen.

Unfortunately this article doesn't tell the whole story. California City is not a desolate, abandoned desert city. California City has a population of over 14,000 people, we have 2 elementary schools, a middle school and a new high school and yes we do have an 80 acre Central Park and a 20+ acre lake. The map depicted above does show an area that the original developer started, but to get an accurate picture of the developed city please go to www.ilovecaliforniacity.com and click on California City Information. Thanks

If you ever want to go there it's east of highway 14, north of highway 58 and west of 395. Edwards AFB is on the south side of rt 58. Easiest way from L.A. is north on I-5, north on 14. A few miles north of Mojave is a small sign pointing east (right turn) to California City. If memory serves me correctly it's about 5 - 8 miles from rt 14.

Nice try but that's not quite the full truth. Area wise it is the 3rd largest "city" in California. But there is actually part of the city that is alive. On the map displayed slide 3 panes west and 2 panes south and you'll see the core of California City. There is a lake and greenery near the city hall. Go confirm this on Mapquest. I've been there two times, once for a land sale presentation (passed) and once to skydive. They have one of the two top skydiving areas around Los Angeles (the other is Lake Perris).
It feels good to write.
