1950s ’til Today – Prom: The Ages and Stages

Prom is an American tradition as true and blue as fireworks and corndogs. We can all look back and smile on the times of brace-faced kisses, first dances with “belt-buckles” rubbing into our crotches, and endless bottles of Smirnoff Ice. In American culture, prom is a rite of passage, a time to slut it up and break out our most stylish get-ups. Let’s take a little promenade to the proms of yester years …

In the fifties, they slow danced under the disco ball to Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender” and went home with their virginity intact. (So they say … )

The hot song choice in the sixties was the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry, Baby” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” by the Shirelles. The ladies’ dresses were purchased at Montgomery Wards and Sears.

The seventies was a time of big hair, big glasses, and big dresses. The buzzy and free-flowing teeny-boppers slow danced to Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now.” The sexual revolution made prom a lot, lot more exciting.

Wow. Either you don't know anything about young people today or you are just a troll in a writer's costume. Seriously, how disrespectful! You should be ashamed of yourself. And Divine Caroline, why would you allow your writer to disrespect today's teens like this.

"They get sloppy-drunk, pregnant, and make bad decisions." Funny part is this is all parental issues and not "prom" issues. Poor parenting. The other funny part is teen pregnancy is at an all time low, even lower than 40s/50s/60s. The only difference now is media coverage. It was taboo to talk about it back in those days.

The prom today picture of the girl with her breasts hanging out, that is discussting. If a mother actually let her daughter out like that should be ashamed of herself!! The school shouldn't allow it either...

Actually, thats not what prom dresses look like now. I'm 17, I would know. If a girl showed up to prom wearing something like that, she would not be allowed in. Period. End of story. The schools have dress codes for prom, for example, you can not show your stomach like that nor a whole ton of cleavage. It just doesn't and i do not know of any girl who would buy an expensive prom ticket and then get a dress that she knows violates the dress code and will get her kicked out.
It feels good to write.
