Fashion Advice: Black Denim Jeans?

Dear Budget Fashionista,
Are black denim jeans at all acceptable? I’ve never cared for them, but the director of my department at work doesn’t like blue denim, so we can’t wear it.

Answer: The ’80s are back and so are its jeans. Black (although with gray, yellow, red, and hot pink) denim jeans are very hot right. In fact, I just bought a pair of black jeans about two weeks ago.

The best styles are those that are a bit more form fittings—either straight leg or the skinny jeans. Think a more structured version of the black legging.

Since you’re new to black denim, my advice would be to try a pair from OldNavy.com. (I am in LOVE with the Sweetheart jeans) for less than $30. If you like them, buy more and/or try out other, more expensive brands.

Here are some ways to wear them:

  • With a belted bright colored trapeze top and a pair of black pumps
  • With a black blazer or swing jacket, make sure you add a pop of color to the outfit so it stands out
  • Layer it with this summer’s trapeze and t-shirt dresses and a funky belt.

The big problem with black jeans is that the color tends to run. Wash your jeans inside out, in cold water, with a color safe washing detergent.
