Inside a Man’s Mind: What They Really Think About Your Shoes

Supremely confident in his metrosexual ways, my straight friend Trent once declared to a room full of women that he could read their shoes like a psychic reads tarot cards, predicting everything from their career to their choice of underwear, or lack thereof. You see, according to him, foot fashions bear distinguishing characteristics that reveal something—no, everything—about the woman wearing them. Needless to say, this alarming bit of info was enough to send a few worn-in mules running toward the nearest exit.

Behold more “nuggets of wisdom” from Trent’s highly evolved male brain. When it comes to heels, size matters. For example, if you wear four-inch skyscraper stilettos, you are considered four times as attractive because you are four times less likely to be able to make a run for it. Inevitably, you would have to walk away slooowly from a man’s advances, whereas a woman wearing Birkenstocks or tennis shoes can easily sprint for the nearest exit. This truth is assumed to be self-evident.

Brand-spanking new shoes (in mass quantities) actually win big points with men, unless you’re married and living on a shared income. You see, new purchases are a form of babying yourself (“Gucci-Gucci-goo”) and if you’re pampering yourself south of the ankles you must like to pleasure yourself in other ways. Crackpot theory? You be the judge.

Conversely, if you’ve worn the same ratty shoes for the last six years, you are the sort of rebel spirit who does what she wants when she wants, and this includes wearing dingy cotton granny panties on a regular basis. Not so good from the horny male perspective.

Now, onto toes. If yours are pristinely pedicured with little rhinestones on top, you are most likely conscientious about grooming. In other words, you keep your legs clean shaven at all times. Men assume other regions will follow suit.

Sigh. Is this really all they think about?

Regardless of how uncomfortable these points are, there’s no denying it: soles are revealing of the soul.

so, basically, if you paint your nails and wear high heels, men think your sexy. if you don't, they think you're brigitte jones' spinster aunt and aren't worth looking at?! what a load of b****cks! i like to look nice, but women who have the time to put flipping rhinestones on their toenails every day are far too high maintenance for the average man. i groom what needs grooming without wasting hours agonizing over the height of my stilettos or which of the 40shades of pink polish to choose from in order to bag a man! jeez. and - i look hot wearing wear tennis shoes. so there.

I like a woman to wear nice shoes, I guess that much is true. I also do prefer a woman to wear heels, they make the calves and thighs and buttocks a more pleasing shape. What I hate women wearing is Uggs or Ughs! as I prefer to call them. They look just plain ugly and render the wearer invisible to my eye. Never has one form of footwear acted better as a form of contraception. Similarly women wearing overly masculine looking shoes can forget it if she thinks she is the height of style. As to the shaving notion, I've given up the hope of ever finding a woman today who doesn't think looking like a pre-adolescent is a good thing. There's nothing more repellent to me than bald pudenda, a woman should for heaven's sake be allowed to look like a woman and not an eight year old!

Hi Steph, methinks your friend Trent is ... well, let's just say we might take out the 'metro' and replace that with something that sounds like the last name of a certain Dallas Cowboys QB and we might be moving towards the truth a little here .... but just because the ladies might judge a book by its boot, it doesn't follow that men follow suit so to speak. John, below me there has a foot fetish, so obviously he'll notice what's on the end of her pins moreso ... call me shallow ... but when I look at a woman, it is head to toe, and less of the toe ..... and even then it's just to see if they're wearing f%&k-me shoes as they say back home .... The moral of the story? Shoes are waaay more important to Women than Women's shoes are to men. Again, King Shallow, we're not really into women's shoes (apart from John and his friends of like mind, granted) as much as we are ... em ... in other parts.

Thats not what all men think. As a straight man and one with a foot fetish, I find myself always noticing a woman's feet. I have come to a couple of conclusions, myself: 1. If a woman has red or black polish, it normally means that there is something 'kinky' about her. For a long time, only those 'other' women, pagans, freaks and geeks, wore black nail polish. Now, its anyone who wants to look sexy. 2. If a woman even bothers to do her nails and make them look nice, there has to be a reason for it. I know women who always wore their feet in shoes, even though the nails were done just because. But because they know that some guys really like to see toes and feet, they will wear more shoes that show them off. 3. I think only frat guys think that if a girl has shaven legs that they shave 'everywhere'. Or that is something that guys who are just your typical guy, thinks about. 4. A woman with heels likes to be in control. The higher the heel, the more control she likes.

I too love shoes! But? I love comfortable shoes! I love my Crocs! I love my Asics! I love my Mary Jane's! I don't care what men think of my clothes or shoes! I am amused by women that dress for men! Oh well...I am very secure! Having a great sense of humor helps tremendously as well! Liked the article! High Heels? Not in this lady's closet!
It feels good to write.
