Wholly Homespun

The holidays are coming and my favorite gifts are always the handmade ones. The ones that when you hold them you can almost feel the energy of the person who made it coming through. If you’re the kind (like us) who can’t resist scouring local craft fairs for handmade treasures, you’ll love these homespun works of jewelry and accessories from The Hole Thing. They’re made from recycled wool sweaters—though it’s hard to believe something so hip could come from such humble beginnings.

The necklaces have big, bright spheres and squares of felted wool, laced with buttons and strung on a leather cord. The pins are made with layered circles to form flowers that have a funky, retro vibe. The garland is like nothing we’ve seen before (makes a great gift for a special friend or teacher). It’s a fresh idea for decorating a tabletop, doorway, window or tree. Here at Daily Grommet we used it to decorate our PossibiliTree. It can also be donned as a scarf or necklace if you’re in the mood to be hip in a crafty sort of way.

The brain—and hands—behind The Hole Thing belong to Louise Cady-Fernandes, who worked as a knitwear technician for a famous clothing line until 2007, when she left to pursue something more creative. Her epiphany for The Hole Thing came while she was piecing together a blanket made from felted remnants of family members’ wool sweaters. Since then, her love for felted wool, playful dots and pearl edgings have come together, one Hole Thing at a time.
