Relocation: Things We Forget to Consider

I am fanatical about having an annual check-up around my birthday (helps me know what am working with for the next year!), but this year I was moving from the Midwest to the Southwest, so inevitably my check-up had to be postponed. As soon as I began to feel settled, I started looking around for a doctor. I had no idea I was about to send out smoke signals for Desperately Seeking: health-care, wireless internet home service, clear TV and cell phone reception, late night dining, evening shopping, weekend entertainment!

When it came to relocation, I was so eager and so concerned about the economic impact of the move, it did not occur to me to seriously check out the lifestyle impact of the move.

It took me over three months to see a doctor, who referred me to specialist, and that took another seven weeks to get an appointment! What’s scary was she shared with me that she was only one in half a dozen in the STATE! Scary stuff. Six months later I’m still looking to get in to see a dentist and optician.

I enjoy eating out late, so I was stunned to see restaurants closing before 9 p.m.—on the weekend! Who would have thought to check this out?

I’m an online junkie—having lived in with wireless access for several years, I had to go out and buy wires to hook up to cable access because that’s all that available in my part of town. My cell phone for the first time ever is having a chronic case of, “Can you here me now?!”

I Google everything so it came as a jolt to the system to have fruitless search results for local entertainment. It’s amazing that I live in a tourist city but nothing is publicized to the locals! It seems like word-of-mouth is the best way to know what’s happening in town!

As for shopping, don’t get me started! I’m not a shop-aholic, but I do like nice things. I was sharing my frustration with another transplant, she told me she gave up years ago—she hops on a plane to Vegas to shop! I don’t believe I’m that extreme. I’d rather shop online, but you already know the dilemma with this plan! Gulp!
