When my alarm clock rang,
I opened my eyes
And the world was gone.
And when I looked at it,
It didn’t tell the time
Because its purpose
Wasn’t to tell the time at all,
But to wake me up.
I looked down at the ground,
Where I saw a red line
That led off into forever.
And on either side
Were thousands of people that were crossing it,
Back and forth, back and forth.
I wondered if their alarm clocks had gone off, too.
I didn’t know which way to go,
So I simply stayed on the red line.
When a man was crossing,
I asked him if his alarm clock had gone off,
But he didn’t know,
So he just continued to cross the line.
And as I stood there,
Not knowing what to do,
I saw a woman
Who was standing on one side of the line,
Not even thinking about crossing it.
And she seemed to be the only one
Who knew where she was.
In her hands
She was holding an alarm clock.
I looked down to find that I was still holding mine, too.
But all of the people crossing the line
Must have lost theirs,
Because their hands were empty.
So, carrying the alarm clock in my hands
I crossed the line
And joined the woman.
And suddenly all the people crossing the line
Stopped for a minute
And looked at me.
For a second, they all looked so lost and confused
That I wanted to help them.
But then, they all started crossing the line again,
So I stood there next to the woman,
With my alarm clock in my hand,
And I realized
That it never would have
To go off
Again.
