The Spirit of Tom Joad

“When you hear a child
cry from thirst and hunger,
I’ll be there.
When you pass by
the out-of-work and
homeless
waitin‘ in line
for food and clothing from shelters,
I’ll be there.
When you see people
protesting in the streets
against the injustices’ of tyranny,
I’ll be there.
Wherever lay dying
young men and women
on the fields of War,
making their final peace with God,
you’ll see me ...

cause I’ll be there,
always!”

Powerful and well said. But, 'tis God who ultimately watches as we all turn away our heads from someone with a cardboard sign asking for money for food as they are hungry. He is the one who is always near to the fearless, the sad, the dead and dying and the hungry. But, we need more than food for our bodies, we need sustenance for our souls if we are to make changes in this world and end up in heaven someday. I will be there for those I meet along my way. Will you join me in their causes, too? I think you will for your poetry shows that you care. Godspeed, Mark. And Goodnight. 11:26 p.m. Thursday August 20, 2009.
