Letter Writing – The “Old School” Way

Do you remember the days prior to the age of email? Think back to the time when you owned ten or more sets of pretty stationery. I know, many people still own ten or more sets of pretty stationery, but it (having/using email) begs the question: Do you actually use it?

In a time filled with electronic data and multitudes of input begging for our attention everyday, some people may enjoy communications of an older form (or an “old school” way) instead. My snail mailbox is wrought with bills, credit card inquiries and TONS of junk mail! I personally think it’s exciting to find a handwritten letter or card waiting for me at the end of the day. It’s a welcome change to the typical junk that greets me everyday but Sundays and holidays.

Handwritten letters have that extra touch of personalization and love, if you will. Someone sat down and personally wrote a letter by hand to you and only you. They didn’t type a blanket email that was sent to fifty-seven people, right? Instead, they wrote something just for you on special stationery and perhaps with a favorite pen.

It’s funny (as in weird, not ha ha), I can sit down and write a letter to someone (typically my Grandma), put it in an envelope, address it and stamp it, but many times it doesn’t make it off my desk into the mailbox right away. I’m even worse with mailing packages, so we won’t even go there. I’m getting better about mailing snail mail, but I haven’t figured out how to bring myself to send a package. Does that even make sense? I know, it doesn’t make sense to me either.

Anyway, I’m getting on a personal campaign to purchase and use stationery and to actually mail letters much more often than I currently do. Who knows, I may motivate myself enough to mail the Christmas, birthday and Mother’s Day presents that are sitting on my desk too. Wow, that’s pretty embarrassing to admit! But now it’s out there, so hopefully that will motivate me to take them down to the post office. (Sometimes I really amaze myself.)

Anyway, I received some really cute, high quality samples of personalized note cards, photo notepad paper, and calling cards I found on TheFind.com. They’ve inspired this personal campaign of mine with their super cute paper products!

Happy Writing!

Payton, I enjoy letter-writing..I didn't care what paper I used. I also enjoy receiving letters, however, it seems I have written more than has come back to me...in any case I continue to write a little note now and again on recently purchased personal stationery(1st for me). I enjoy e-mail too; but it's just not the same unless it has the attachment with that something extra special. Now that schoolwork is in line for me I am hoping to put this letter-writing into good form for more appropriate matters, be it poetry, writing books, etc.
My grandmother writes to me at least once a month, and sometimes twice a month. She, and my good friend Beth, are the only people who now put pen to paper and write to me. My grandmother hates to talk on the phone but her voice is loud and clear in her letters. i think she tells me more in her letters than she ever would over the phone anyway. I get the weather report, the dining report (what she ate all week for lunch and dinner!), the news, the obits, and what all the family gossip. Her letters bring me so much joy and I love that I can revisit them later to enjoy all over again. Beth and I write cards every so often, just to say hi and give each other a break from our hectic lives as working parents. I hope we will always do this. My husband and I used to write to each other when we were first dating and I now think I should start writing him the occasional letter again. the effort and thought will show how much I appreciate him. Nice paper definitely helps inspire the writing mood!
It feels good to write.
