Audience Participation

I have this little quirk.

Okay, I have more than one, but we’ll start here.

I love watching TV (this is not my quirk; just a bad habit.) I get very involved in what I’m watching. But I get even more involved in the commercials.

For example …

The woman in the mom jeans says, “I am so tired of these lime and rust stains in my shower.” I say (in the same overly sincere voice) “Gosh. Me too!”

The ITT Tech commercial asks if I’m ready for a new career. I say, “I am! How did you know?”

A woman talks about how much weight she has lost on Jenny Craig. I respond with “Now we should do something about your hair.”

Any commercial that has a stupid song requires me singing along in my best cheesy, commercial singer voice. My personal fave? 800-588-2300 Empire! (You just sang that, didn’t you? I hope you used an incredibly annoying breathy voice.)

There are very few commercials that I don’t have some kind of running dialogue with. Luckily Ricky thinks it’s cute. (He actually does it himself sometimes!) The other night I must have been doing it more than usual though. I was watching the telly, he was doing some work on the computer and suddenly he started laughing.

I asked him what was so funny and he said, “You’re so … participatory tonight.”

Anyone else do this or am I weirder than we initially thought?

I do this all the time-my teenagers just roll their eyes at me!

I do that sometimes. Mostly to the radio.
It feels good to write.
