Sapphira: The Bounty Huntress

I had always laughed at those folks who came to work saying, “You’ll never believe what happened this morning?! My cat brought me a dead mouse and placed it at my feet.”

I truly had never expected that my sweet, little five month old “baby kitty” would be one of those big tough kitties that were out on the prowl looking for some choice morsels to bring home to “mom and dad.” Since my little one was an “indoor” kitty, I never thought that she would have the opportunity to become a huntress. Boy was I wrong!

A couple of days before the “incident,” Sapphira was acting rather cranky and irritable. Very unusual for my very friendly and people loving kitty.

I thought that maybe she was a bit unhappy because my father’s Italian greyhound, Sophie, hadn’t been over in a couple of days to play with Sapphira.

My husband and I were watching Sapphira and noticed that she parked herself right next to a curio cabinet that we have in our living room. She sat like a Sphinx, staring intently behind the small crack between the wall and the curio cabinet.

We saw her jump up in the air a couple of times and thought that maybe she was chasing a fly that we hadn’t seen. Life continued as normal in our hectic household and we thought no more of it.

Early in the morning on the day of the “incident,” Sapphira still wasn’t acting her normal, cheerful self.

She parked herself next to the curio cabinet again before my husband left for work that morning.

My dad dropped Sophie off before he went off to work and I thought that Sapphira would be happy to have her playmate back for the day.

About a half hour later, I was lying on the floor woozling and playing with Sophie when I heard Sapphira behind me. She gave a loud “MEOWL” (which is her customary statement indicating that all attention should be devoted to her and nothing else).

I looked behind me and lo and behold, what do I see? A tiny, unmoving mouse.

I went over to get a closer look (really HOPING that the mouse that I was seeing was actually one of Sapphira’s “toy” mice and not one of the recently deceased variety). Sure enough, it was a REAL mouse. My sweet, little innocent Persian baby had captured herself a real mouse and had brought it over to “mommy” for her approval.

This is a funny piece! I had a cat who did the same but didn't realize at the time she was showing off her trophy. I'm a cat lover myself. Have several cats in my hometown but none in the country where I now work. I miss them much. Do write more about Sapphira.
It feels good to write.
