Is Our Personality Written in Our Handwriting?

Spacing: What kind of space lies between the first name and last name (or middle name/initial, if that’s included in the signature)? The bigger the gap, the more a person is attempting to remove him or herself from a familial identity and focus on an individual one. The large space between Jane and Doe in the signature below indicates a tension and separation between the two.

Currently, graphology is thought of as a pseudoscience by the scientific community, meaning that it holds about as much clout as astrology or palm reading. There have been numerous studies that attempted to prove its accuracy, but most have been unsuccessful. There are some points that I disagree with, such as a tail at the end of the signature symbolizing a cry for attention. (What if you just have a long and complicated last name?) Plus our handwriting can be affected by outside factors, such as how it becomes more jumbled if we’re in a hurry.

But I believe that studying handwriting could offer some understanding about ourselves, if only because it’s so individualized. Like any other method of personality analysis, it’s just a fun way to deconstruct ourselves in the hopes of getting a glimpse at who we really are. And maybe that’s not exactly written in the stars or our signatures, but it’s still fun to look.

What a load of... Just, wow... Anyway, raphology has been controversial for more than a century. Although supporters point to the anecdotal evidence of thousands of positive testimonials as a reason to use it for personality evaluation, most empirical studies (and this is REAL research, mind you) fail to show the validity claimed by its supporters. I recently attended a graphology class by a woman who had been asked to use her expertise in court ( so she said.) She has traveled the world in her career and seemed pretty knowledgeable, & lots of fun for all of us. This article is also very well written & researched. It has a lot of stuff in it that I had to glean from a large workbook, before I felt I might be able to analyse someone's handwriting...For a short article, this one is remarkably useful !

Hi Loren! I think you are writing about love in the narrow romantic sense. There are people that I love very much but would never want to live with. So I understand some wanting analysis of a potential lover's hand writting to decide wither or not to pursue a more permanent relationship. Further back there was discussion on being able to tell gender from hand writing......well do transgendered individuals write like the sex they were born with? Or does their writing show the true gender of the person?

happy gooberhead: love is an abstract concept of emotional attachment esoteric to the perceiver of that emotion. i have had many people submit exemplars from people they were thinking of dating for analysis. they later reported back that the effort was worth it based on my conclusions.
