If you are beginning to feel a chill in the air, you might get the “bug” to do a bit of fall Decorating and put some Halloween decorations around the house! My kids love Halloween decorations more than anything and we have a particularly well loved skeleton that is named Arnold (but that’s another story). I have some crafty and not so crafty ideas for some wonderful fall decorations around your house.
If you’re a member of the crafty impaired, I often find that simply grouping pumpkins, on the porch, on a coffee table or even as a centerpiece … makes a wonderful seasonal statement, gather up some leaves from the ground and stick them between the pumpkins and you’ve done something creative and wonderful!
Feeling a bit craftier? Then, felt a pumpkin! Felting is fun—and therapeutic! You take a long needle and stab repeatedly into felt. As you stab, the fibers gather together and you can mold the piece into something wonderful. There’s a great tutorial here for the really cute pumpkin in this picture. Or you can knit one and then felt it afterward. Knitty.com has a wonderful tutorial; what a great project for those of you who are serial knitters!
One of our favorite family decorations is a scarecrow for the front porch! We simply gather up Dad’s old pants, and an old shirt and a pair of boots (or shoes) stuff all of them with paper or plastic bags (what a great use for those nasty, apolitically correct plastic grocery bags!) and stuffed him until he looks sort of like a person. You can also stuff him with raked up leaves from the lawn, but we never have enough in our yard.
The cutest way I’ve sent this done is with a pumpkin as a head, but you have to have something to support the pumpkin and we never go the hang of that. So our family just puts a large cowboy hat over a big beach ball and slouch him over like he’s sleeping. You might need some tape or clothes pins to stabilize everything, but our guy just sits on our front porch in a chair. Tada! A really cute decoration for any porch!
If that’s just not enough of a challenge, and you’d love to have something a bit more creepy, try the tutorial for the Beloved gravestone. Wow! It’s spectacular (or is that spook-tacular) and would be amazing to see finished in your yard. I’m sure you’d use it for years, but I think that one qualifies as an “advanced” in the crafty department.
If none of these are your “thing” there are tutorials all over the internet for swags, wreaths and centerpieces that will round out any fall home makeover! Love to see what you come up with gals!
