If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em: Why a woman should consider fantasy football.
When talking to those that know me, at some point the conversation will turn to football. Then, the conversation turns to fantasy football. The men get it and we begin discussing fantasy football history, strategy, or one of our many “what could have been” stories. Many of the women just look at me like I’m crazy. Even when I try to explain fantasy football in basic terms, I often get a blank stare. We then talk about party recipes, shopping, or another topic that the person might be more comfortable discussing.
I’m suggesting that women go beyond their comfort zone and let the dialogue continue. Many may find that fantasy football might actually be worth a try. There are actually some great benefits to playing the game, a few of which I will outline later in this article.
To give you a brief description, fantasy football involves selecting (drafting) real NFL players for your team. The statistics for your players each week are compared with the other teams in your league. In most leagues, you would earn a victory if your group of players scores more points than your opponent for a given week.
First, let’s start with a few of the myths surrounding fantasy football:
Football is too hard to understand. Do you really need to know the difference between a shooting guard and a point guard to enjoy basketball? Do you really need to know how to enter a 5-4-3 double play on a scorecard to enjoy a day at a baseball game? As with any sport, it’s as complicated as you make it out to be. If you know what a touchdown is, and you know what a field goal is, you can enjoy fantasy football. Even if you want to know just a few of the basic rules of football, the internet can help you in a flash. But, it is not necessary in order to play.
