Leadership is a word that we have heard ever since we were in our eighth grade global studies class. What does it mean and what does a true leader accomplish? Leadership is having the courage to make a change, and in turn, leadership often leads to courageousness because taking a stand and following through in your mission are not always the popular choices. A true leader makes a change, but in the process, influences others to do so as well.
Teens today often struggle when it comes to being a positive leader. In high school settings, teens are often negative, encouraging their peers to garner attention for behaving inappropriately or acting out. However, nationwide, many teens are becoming leaders and influencing others to be aware of causes they are passionate about. There is hope and many teens are finding it tangibly through service.
Volunteering encourages teens to be leaders, whether it be at a local soup kitchen, nursery school, or even senior home. GlamourGals volunteers grow their skills and “emotional maturity” through their intergenerational volunteering at local senior homes. Through this unique experience of interacting with elderly women, these teens become more patient, compassionate, and understanding. GlamourGals founder and president, Rachel Doyle notes, “In our program, the makeover is just the hook to get the teens involved. At the end of the volunteer makeover, there is an energy in the room from conversation, laughter, and color, and once-hesitant teen volunteers are embracing their new elderly friends. It is touching to watch.”
How does this ultimately cause a change? These teens take these traits they learn and apply them to their college career and ultimately, their place of employment. Being a kind, organized volunteer often translates to a successful student, and therefore, a powerful employee.
Becoming a leader early on and learning valuable traits while giving back to the community can create strong adults who will ultimately be the leaders that our society needs!
