The Fun Theory

Can making something more fun change human behavior for the better? These three videos prove this simple concept can indeed influence behavior and make even the mundane more enjoyable.

The Fun Theory is a series of experiments captured on video that prove this point very convincingly. Sponsored by Volkswagen Sweden, the series is a refreshing look at what can happen with a little creativity, ingenuity, and a good sense of humor.

Video 1: Piano Staircase
By turning ordinary stairs into a piano keyboard (a la Tom Hanks in Big), the experiment showed that 66 percent more people took the stairs over the escalator.

Video 2: Bottle Bank Arcade
In Sweden, cans and plastic bottles fetch a redemption value; however, bottles don’t. To increase glass bottle recycling, a glass recycling station was turned into an arcade game. The results were impressive; people used the arcade version fifty times more than the nearest traditional station.

Interesting point on the third Fun Theory video - the first people featured appear to be using sign language.

O
I absolutely love the fun theory. The possibilities are endless and the benefits equally so.
It feels good to write.
