The Flogging of Iran’s President: Appropriate or Rude?

Columbia University President, Lee Bollinger, invited Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to speak at his university. When introducing Ahmadinejad, Bollinger said he exhibits “all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator,” and called him “either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated.”

In my opinion, there is something unseemly about a university president denouncing his guest in an academic setting.

Did Bollinger cross the line, or was his introduction appropriate? Click on JOIN THE CHIT CHAT to join the discussion.

I am sorry, excuse me?? The school was a horriblle host?? The irresponsibility lies for me, in the institution that invited that asshole! THAT sole act, gave Iran so much credibility it was not even funny, and that man is disgusting to say the least, however you say his name. His feet should never be allowed on US soil unless as well put, they throw him in jail for visious world wide human crimes. Right on with the PC factor! I think it should be changed to mean Pure Crap!

The Bollinger guy should be accused and tried as a traitor.

This was completely outrageous, so undermining to our country, and our troops. It was clearly entirely discusting

The Iranian president uses his armed forces to train terrorists groups and supply them with weapons to carry out plots around the world. I wonder why he was allowed to leave the United States and not imprisoned. I find it insulting that our political correctness has blinded us to the fact that we are in a state of world war.

I agree with Brie, if you're going to invite someone to speak, you have to ask yourself why you're doing so; if the answer is to insult him, it's probably not a good idea to invite him in the first place. If you want to give him a fair hearing, then you should be prepared to treat him with at least nominal courtesy and impartiality.

He totally crossed the line. In that setting, I think he should've kept his opinion to himself and treated his speaker and guest with the same respect given to anyone else speaking at the university. Shame on him, his mother surely taught him better!
I think Mr. Bollinger exhibited all the signs of a petty and cruel host, and he was either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated in basic manners. Tut tut tut...

What I can't understand is why Columbia invited Ahmadinejad to speak in the first place. By giving him a forum to expound his ridiculous and hypocritical views, they validate his position as a ruler. While students in the audience were able to laugh at his statements, the citizens of Iran have to live with the consequences of his ideas.

Completely inappropriate, I mean...come on? I can't believe this really happened. What has happened to our education system when the class and manners of a college president go down the toilet. Why would the invitation be extended if he felt so strongly against Ahmadinejad? It doesn't make any sense. It makes me think that nobody in America is safe from inheriting the whiny, trashy, reality TV star-like qualities that is bound to take over the mindsets of my fellow citizens. I expect more from Columbia University. I expect more from a human being, no matter what their opinions might be.
