My Father was a paratrooper with the 82nd airborn during world war II. He spoke very little about his time in the army other than what boot camp was like or training to be a paratrooper. He told me about being in the battle of the bluge and how they had parashooted in between ( witch they did'nt know at the time) two Nazi battalions and a bloody firefight commenced, leaving my Dads company with very few survivors. One of his commanding officers was shot for having a German hand gun on his person.Dad was taken prisoner and sent to a camp. There was only one time my Dad said anything about being in the camp.He said"You would'nt belive what I had to do to surive in that place." When I pressed him about it he said"I can't .I can't talk about it."So I never brought it up again. That war made an impact on his soul. Dad did'nt keep any medals or anything he recived during his tour of duty, not that he was'nt proud to have served his country,I think he just wanted to forget that time in his life.

Thank you so much for reminding us all what war means so individuals. I encourage everyone who hasn't experienced Burns' series to do so. It's full of these riveting stories.
It feels good to write.
