A Powerful Noise is one of the most important projects I’ve ever had the honor of working on. It has become so much more than just a film to me—I have proudly witnessed it become a catalyst for change and a compelling reminder that it’s way past time the world recognizes a simple, important fact: the solution to global poverty and injustice lies in girls and women.
I have long believed that an empowered woman is an unstoppable force. She refuses to be marginalized and does not let her oppressors extinguish her voice. She is a savvy inventor in her family and community. She is a natural teacher, a model, and champion for the next generation. International humanitarian organizations like CARE have studies to prove that empowered women are a lasting solution to extreme poverty. However, they also have learned that women in the developing world cannot lift themselves up alone; they need the support and solidarity of women in developed nations to do so. Serving as a Global Ambassador for CARE has opened my eye to the true potential women have to change the world. In my travels with CARE, I have seen how much all women have in common, despite differences of ethnicity, class, language, or education. And I have seen how much we here in the U.S. can learn from our sisters overseas. “A Powerful Noise” introduces us to three women whose lives and circumstances may be very different from our own, but whose strength, compassion, and radiance inspire us, and whose stories will resonate for years to come.
Hanh, an HIV-positive widow fighting AIDS in Vietnam, Nada, rebuilding her community after the Bosnian war, and Jacqueline, educating girls in the slums of Mali, are all portraits of resilience and fortitude. But these three stories of women sparking remarkable changes in their communities also stand as emblems of the millions of stories of other women around the world who battle, and overcome, ignorance, poverty, oppression and ethnic strife on a daily basis. In honoring Hanh, Nada, and Jacqueline, “A Powerful Noise” honors all powerful women across the globe. Now is your chance to join me in recognizing the millions of powerful women who struggle each and every day to make their communities better, safer places. Join your voice with mine in supporting this movement and together our message—that women are the solution—will be projected louder and farther than ever before. And let these amazing women know they do not fight alone.
