Why Do Americans Fear Socialism?

A Facebook friend wrote me a letter saying she agreed with me that Americans are unduly afraid of socialism and speak about it as though it were communism. I wrote her back.

Dear Tanya, I don’t want to “become a socialist” anymore than I want to “become a dentist.” I am not a person who joins political parties. Labels restrict people.

Why can’t Americans think outside their own system? Yes, they are isolated and yes, they are brainwashed—but mostly they are under-educated. The public schools in the United States don’t work. There is no single education level which each and every American kid goes to school to attain. Each state and, in some cases, each county and even each township has its own education system with its own rules and standards and books and levels of excellence. (Or should I say mediocrity?) If you consider the number of functionaries and bureaucrats employed by these hundreds of thousands of inefficient school boards and departments and offices and playgrounds—the secretarial staff payroll alone would weigh down and suck the life out of any large company trying to improve product or make a profit. Imagine what it does to schools.

Socialism is not communism. No way. It’s a democratic method of improving the lifestyles of the people in a country so they can live productive lives. It’s a way of ensuring they can sleep at night if they have a handicapped child or an aging parent who needs expensive care, if they need glasses or a mammogram or a test for prostate cancer. An MRI? A sonogram? An education. Daycare. Trains that run on time. Public television which instructs people, and so forth.

America not only needs more socialism, it needs an education about what socialism is and what it can do for it. But first, education in America needs a bath to wash away football and volleyball and “twirling” and the rest of the frivolous extra curricular activities from schools. Concentrate on learning. Be certain teachers have advanced degrees in their subjects before giving them tenure. And for Heaven’s sake, get one U.S standard of excellence toward which each and every child can strive so that by age eighteen a kid has a chance to make it through one of the top-rated, FREE universities.

Why don’t Americans want a better life? Because Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly and the Bushites and the corporate leaders have convinced them otherwise.

Maybe you think I'm ignorant, thanks to our Constiution, you have that right. It's really none of my business what you think of me. But since 3000+ Americans died needlessly, it has made me much more aware of the scary world we live in today. Socialism will only weaken us. Next to comminism it is failing. Aren't you proud of your country? Can't you find one thing in 236 years of freedom to be proud of and say "Yes, that's my country!" Big government is not the answer, when it is evident that the rest of the free world wants to be just like us. Everyone is not totally and completely equal (only in the eyes of God) here on earth only the strong and determined make it, and make it good. Even in the sheep world the weaker ones fall behind so the stronger ones can go on. Sad, but true. Lessons in life can be learned best by watching mother nature in action. Lefties are controlled by their emotions and need to listen to their heads more and their hearts less.

Are you referring to the George W. Bush administration, it only lasted 8 years, unless you were referring to Ronald Reagan he had two 4 year terms, then was followed by 4 years with George H.W. Bush. Maybe that was the twelve years you were talking about. Do me a favor and do a little research on Native American Indian Reservations, especially Pine Ridge Reservation in southern South Dakota. Then tell me how well socialism seems to be working there. Are the Canadians really happy with their national health care system? Or the Brits? One thing I remember my father always saying, " be original, be different then everybody else." If every nation in this world is socialistic, all the more reason I want to be different. If 9-11 had never happened I wonder what the far-left would have done if they couldn't ridicule President Bush? Funny, 9-11 would not have happened if Clinton hadn't weakened our defenses, and taken Bin Laden when he had the chance. 3000+ AMERICANS WOULD BE ALIVE TODAY!

I think the sheep are slowly starting to look up: they've been so badly hurt by the last twelve years of extreme right-wing rule. I'm an avid socialist, and don't understand the resistance to it. Reading negative comments about a socialist government makes me think that the resistance is due to brainwashing and ignorance.

Thank you Wild Ape, I agree with you totally. A few weeks back Ms White emailed me, to tell me my dictionary was incorrect on socialism. She believes the answers to the USA's problems can be answered by taking notes from Europe. I understand she has lived in France for 48 years. But I've lived in the US for 44 and helped my husband run his own business for 25 years. Europe is a laughing stock, 35 hour work weeks and a man in Belgium who loves welfare ,they let him have three wives and 32 children and the gov pays him $7000 per month. If he was here in the US his butt would be in jail, he'd still get 3 squares a day but his new wife would go by the name "Bubba". Europe wouldn't have anything if it wasn't for Americans. Africa should get their act together also, educate their people about health and agriculture and quit asking US for help. Iran, North Korea wake up. Hitler was real and how far did he get? I'm sick and tired of third world countries hating us but love our money.

Public schools are a classic example of socialism at work. I had to laugh when you nailed it about levels of mediocrity. I think that is socialism in a nutshell--guaranteed mediocrity. And then you slam bureaucrats, which I agree, are a pestilence to society. Socialism is steeped in bureaucrats. Considering that the government can't do basic things effectively I'm amazed that anyone would want to subjugate themselves to socialized medicine. As a vet I can tell you that the free healthcare, government care is the absolute worst. I've had a thurough education in socialism. It sucks, plain and simple. Our nation would be better served if more knew about capitalism and how it works. I thought you piece was a spoof, honestly. I liked your stories about astrology much more.
