ONE Applauds Bush for Commitment to Fight Poverty, Disease, and Illiteracy

President Bush appeals to world leaders for recommitment to Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

New York, NY—ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History applauds President George Bush for his call today for a recommitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Adopted in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaims that every person around the world must have guaranteed access to rights and freedoms, highlighting the, “equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family.”

“President Bush is challenging world leaders to step up efforts to end the spread of preventable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria and extend basic education and health care programs to those living in the poorest countries,” said Susan McCue, President and CEO of the ONE Campaign. “ONE’s mission is to make sure leaders stay committed and continue supporting efforts to help the world’s poorest people. ONE members from around the country are working night and day to keep our elected and future leaders on track and to help make the fight against global poverty a top priority.”

“When millions of children starve to death or perish from a mosquito bite, we’re not doing our duty in the world,” President Bush said in his annual address to the 192-member states of the United Nations General Assembly. “When whole societies are cut off from the prosperity of the global economy, we’re all worse off ... And when nations make the investments needed to educate their people, the whole world benefits.”

ONE is powered by millions of Americans from all fifty states and more than 150 of the nation’s leading relief, humanitarian, and advocacy organizations. Through ONE.org and work on the ground in local communities, colleges and churches, ONE members are reaching across political aisles to ask elected officials and candidates to work harder to promote healthcare, reduce hunger and educate children in Africa and elsewhere in the world’s poorest places. If achieved, ONE’s actions could help save the lives of 15,000 children a day, provide free access to basic education for out-of-school children, and deliver access to clean water for 450 million people around the world.

I guess it took eight years of being the most powerful man in the world to realize "we're not doing our duty in the world." For once, ill say decent job G Dub.

I think the work that One is doing with politicians and how they have brought Bush on board to start making better decisions to support poverty, human rights, and disease causes is extraordinary. Yet it still boggles my mind when Bush can't even sign a bill that would support our own children here by giving them health care here at home. Sometimes I wonder if Bush is still stuck in his frat days, trying to make a positive splash in the world so that when he does leave his post, he will finally get a real passport and travel without being banished at all borders. But I digress... One is doing a tremendous job...when you can't beat them, join them.
