Making Sense of Political Ads

At election time, our airwaves become cluttered with all kinds of campaign messages—local and state propositions, presidential ads, and “Get out the Vote” commercials. Many of these TV and radio ads can be difficult for children to understand. One of my favorite organizations is a group called CommonSenseMedia. They are a non-profit group that seeks to inform parents and children about media messages in movies, books, games, and TV.

I found this video incredibly helpful as I try to explain to my daughter why the images on the screen may be frightening. I want her to know that these are poor tactics employed by candidates and/or organizations. I hope it proves helpful to you as well.

In case you were wondering how much your kids pay attention to the media around them, especially in the car, my kids could sing the Sleep Train jingle at three years old. That’s scary when I think about what I have been hearing just this week. I’m guessing CDs until November 5th for us.
