Race Will Be the Factor

Barack Obama ought to win the presidency—for a number of reasons.

The most current reason is the worldwide financial crisis. The worldwide financial crisis should easily throw the race to Obama simply because he’s the Democratic candidate at a time when the Republicans and their Wall Street colleagues have destroyed the financial system. Ever since 1840, Americans have chosen the out-of-power-Party to set things right when a financial crisis grips the nation. It’s absolutely predictable.

Another reason Obama ought to win the presidency is his emphasis on meeting America’s energy needs through creative, up-to-date, forward-looking means such as solar power, wind power, significant conservation of energy, tidal power, nuclear power within defined limits, biomass power, and on and on.

Another reason Obama ought to win the presidency is his strong understanding that war is not the answer to much of anything. Obama, more than McCain, would try a wide variety of plans and tactics and overtures to resolve international disputes. He would squeeze every possible ounce of efficacy from those kinds of efforts long before even starting to discuss “war” in the usual sense of that word.

Another reason Obama ought to win the presidency is that his interracial heritage really does represent what America is nowadays. Simply by not being a white male, he represents the present. Every single American president up until now has been a white male. No exceptions. But our country has gown remarkably diverse with huge numbers of Latinos, huge numbers of Asians, huge numbers of very young voters, and huge numbers of Americans who don’t much care about such words as gay, straight, conservative, liberal, born-again, or glass ceiling. These newer Americans are more interested in “Can I buy a home?” or “Are the levees safe, really safe?”

There are many, many more reasons why Obama ought to win the presidency.

If he doesn’t, there’s only one reason for his failure: RACISM. The explanations and the excuses can be wrapped in all kinds of jargon and patriotic lingo but, the harsh truth will remain: RACISM.

You couldn't be more right!!! It's sad that it'll come down to that, but that is the world in which we live. If he were a white man it wouldn't be close. I just hope and pray that Americans will let their racism go and do what is best for our country. If Obama is elected, our country will have made a giant step forward.
