Gimmicks, Race, and the RNC

I have lived in several “red” states all of my life. Born and raised in the Magnolia State, lived for a stint in the swamp lands of Louisiana, and I am raising my kids in the volunteer state of Tennessee. I will always be the girl from Mississippi and I learned to love cultural diversity from Louisiana, but the great state of Tennessee has help shaped my world view more so than any of the other states. All have taught me that a Repub does not make a conservative and every conservative is not a Repub.

The Grand Ole Party not only has a visual image problem but it is in a place that we normally see Demos, absent of leadership, trying to figure out who they are and what group is their base. President Bush’s fall from grace made the Repubs’ reputation take a nosedive in the area of public trust and perception. Big government and outrageous spending that would feel right at home with the Demos, seemed to cloak the Bush Administration like a warm blanket. A message was sent in 2006 that the country was not happy with business as usual, but it took the elections of 2008 to really nail the casket shut. Many folks were buried alive politically. A few, however, managed to dig themselves out of their Rovian graveyard. But hanging out with the walking dead is only popular among morticians and grave diggers.

Senator McCain’s decision to pick Governor Palin was brilliant in strategy, but dumb in execution. Clinton supporters were yelling to the high heavens for a minute there. They would have voted Strawberry Short Cake in office immediately following Senator Clinton’s primary defeat because they wanted a woman so badly. A cartoon character would have sufficed as long as she was a female. Picking a woman was a good call for McCain but the plan lacked intelligence. Those 18 million cracks needed sealing. Picking Gov. Romney (IMHO) would have been a deal sealer and would have made those of us who were hurting in the pocket feel safe and secure (money wise). Many moderate Repubs would have spent more time analyzing the issues than wondering if Palin was sane or not.

Watching Palin come unglued right before American eyes was not how to win an election. It was at times too painful to watch. Palin and that hail Mary pass was a gimmick and it backfired on the Repub party. Senator Obama went on to become our forty-fourth president. Folks had enough of buffoonery and gimmicks.

Genma, I enjoyed reading this article--I think you really hit the nail on the head about the Repubs' strategy with Palin and how it backfired (thank goodness). I think McCain's campaign was smart to think outside the box when picking a running mate, but the governor of Alaska fell short of a successful solution. Plus, it's hard to compete against the charisma and intellect of Obama, no matter who you choose.

Genma, You raise a lot good points in the article. My own vehement opposition to Palin was that she was chosen solely because she was a woman. A man with the same qualifications wouldn't have even made the longest of lists. I too am suspect of Steele's rise to head the RNC. It certainly will be intersesting to watch the Republicans rebrand. So far, those left on capital hill seem to have missed the memo that the American public is ready for a change. Change is coming either way... with or without them. Best, K

You know I will say, I think Michael Steele will be great. Even if they did vote him in because (mostly) for the reason he is black, he is a very wise man. The road will be long though, you are right on that.

You know what they say, the school of hard knocks. i think it is great he is black, but he aint gettin my vote just for that. Those cielings have been broke for a long time, it just takes the biggest one to break in order to satisfy, well like what Cosby talks about. I am not racist, but give me a break, he is running around saying I won I won, well no shit sherlock. Keep up the good posts. Got anything in Forums? It is mostly stupid crap, but you would be a good addition. I am kind of new so I have been reading around, do you know this Cj lady that has written some articles around here?

Hey, I think people forget, just as the global warmer maoney makers do, history repeats itself. Bush is taking a dive, just like any other pres has in war times. It's total crap, the guy, gives his life your 8 years, and he really doesn't make enough for me to do it, could have been playing in his own oil fields, as we should be and would be if the dems would have gotten of their asses 10 years ago, we would have it today. The human rights issue, no democrats think about that, they even take from their own here and make it sound like they are really going to take care of people in need. never has happened, and will never happen, but they tell the dream well. it is a nice thing to believe in and it is true, Obama had it right when he PA cling to their religion and there guns. Shit people have to have something to cling to, he made it sound like that was something bad, has he ever heard of showing someone how to fish, instead of just handing them one?
It feels good to write.
