Another Soapbox

I’m aware that I may have been harsh or offending maybe even bouncy in my first soapbox article so I’m making it my mission to keep this easier on the reader. Only one issue at a time, and I’ll try to stay as civil as possible and avoid that sarcasm that so easily invades my tongue or, in this case, fingertips. But up for grabs today is the resounding and always emotional topic of gay marriage.

Eeewww. Gay marriage! I can just hear it now, the little voices opposing to human rights. Because after all it’s a right to be married. One that many people in America don’t have to worry about unless of course they are gay or lesbian. Now, if I am correct, you don’t want people to be married because they are in love with somebody. Oh you mean because they are in love with somebody you didn’t approve of, and you get the right to judge because? Because you’re God? Now there are the two types of people who oppose gay marriage, one being those who are religiously against it and two being those who are just grossed out by it. Okay, let’s start with number one. No one’s religion is without its faults but everyone has the choice to fix that. Seriously, if you’re going to use your religion as a wall, crutch, or weapon then just step aside and let the people who care get things done. I’d like to use a quote that really caught my eye.

“Religion often gets in the way of God.” -Bono

The masses out there using your religion to boss people around and make them feel unworthy are wrong. You know how it feels every time you hear a bad slanderous joke on television or when a peer says something insulting about your God. You get angry or maybe just sad because you want to say to those people, “My religion isn’t like that. That’s not how it goes. That’s not how it works. You’re ruining its reputation just because you don’t have the same faith.” Our country was literally founded on the idea of tolerance, religious tolerance mainly but tolerance nonetheless. Now some of you are like, okay this person doesn’t care if the gay people are dammed to hell? Well I care what happens but if God really loves everybody and humans were created n his image and what not then why would he condemn those who are innocent and in love. It reminds me of when I had to read Romeo and Juliet; that was tragedy. I didn’t understand why they all had to suffer because some people weren’t okay with the outcome that, in the end, really only benefitted everyone else. Now, on to the second type of people. Those of you who are grossed out and have no other reason to oppose something other than the fact that it doesn’t fit your idea of cool are just stupid. Here comes the offending side but, honestly if you don’t have a good reason except for the fact that it’s gross to think of two guys together then here’s your solution. Don’t think. About it. No one is in your face demanding to know what’s going on behind your bedroom door. Why, because that’s personal and doesn’t actually have an impact on about 99 percent of the population. That simple. Live and let live.

Okay, I have had enough of that. I really had to keep my more emotional or personal views seep through, though, that’s hard to tell. Don’t take it personally I just think you’re wrong when you nay say to good people.

If you want to engender people to your cause, you need to explore more facets of the issue than just telling people they're wrong and stupid. If you're against what they say about gay marriage - in which they probably say it's stupid and wrong - you should fire back with more eloquent and substantial information and debate. People are allowed to do what they want- free will (as many religions purport) - which means if they dont like something based on their morals, well let them. You have yours, and they theirs.
It feels good to write.
