In honor of Mother Earth Day, we want to hear about your experiences with environmental organizations. What global or local organizations inspire you? So many of us have become interested in protecting our local environments and making a difference in the lives of others globally, too. Do you donate your time to an organization that works on watershed issues? Perhaps you spend time working on local sustainability issues?

I'm a big fan of Build It Green http://www.builditgreen.org/ - they are a California wide organization working to promote building that is healthier for residents, builders, and the planet. I think they are one of the more practical organizations in this field, simultaneously training building professionals, making info and other resources available to consumers...and offering amazing Green Home Tours so that we can see what's possible. I recommend them highly!

Planetpals.com a great site geared to educating children (but adults will love it ,too) about the environment! Planetpals characters are so cute and I use the website and activities as part of the curriculum for my elementary school students. I think what Planetpals is doing to help educate our future adults and inspire them to think globally and responsibly deserves a lot of credit! www.planetpals.com
Trout Unlimited, an organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of fresh water streams, the natural habitat for trout. Why is this my choice? Because TU has made sure thousands of miles of America's streams are kept clean. And anyone who has ever seen a child learn how to fly fish with his daddy or grand father on a pristine river knows the immeasurable value of that.
Two that I love on each coast: California's San Francisco Conservation Corps Recycling Center and New York's Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The SF Recycling center is a wonderful place to recycle almost everything imaginable, and they are dedicated to educating young adults with hands-on experience. In Brooklyn, the Gardens have a remarkable compost education area (for indoors or outdoors)--and make it very accessible for children as well as adults.
It feels good to write.
