For 2009, we suggest considering “ecosolutions” like those below, excerpted from our new book, Celebrate Green! Creating Eco-Savvy Holidays, Celebrations, and Traditions for the Whole Family.
Traditional Resolution—Lynn and Corey’s Ecosolutions
Lose weight/eat right—Eat organic, whole foods and be aware of portions
Pay off debt/save money—Reduce consumption and pay off debt or pad your nest egg with money saved
Get a better job—Find or create work that is fulfilling for you and that contributes to the betterment of the world, however large or small the scale may be
Get fit—Ride your bike or walk for transportation.
Get a better education/be constantly learning—Educate yourself about issues that affect you, your family, your community, the global community, and the planet. Strive to learn one new fact every day and share what you know with others. You could also take a class in biodynamic gardening or even earn a “green” MBA.
Drink less alcohol—Drink less, but if you do consume, buy organic/biodynamically grown and give preference to glass bottles over aluminum
Quit smoking—Quit smoking and donate the money you previously spent on cigarettes (and/or the equivalent of time you spent smoking) to an organization that is working to prevent cancer
Reduce stress—Pamper yourself with produce you make with organic food, herbs and oils, and only buy beauty products that are free of toxic chemicals. Patronize organic and eco-friendly spas.
Take a trip—Take an eco-vacation as close to home as possible (and buy carbon offsets for travel)
Get organized—Reduce the amount of “stuff” you acquire (and accumulate.). Take care of what you own and find ways to reuse or recycle everything else. Buy only high quality, eco-friendly products that won’t need replacing, and clean your home only with homemade or non-toxic products from trusted companies.
Resolutions that don’t need updating:
- Volunteer to help others.
- Enjoy more quality time with friends and family
- Find your soul mate (assuming you’re not already married!)
