Nine Things American Women Take for Granted

Women have never had it easy, but we have more opportunities and freedom than we did even a century ago. Keep reading for nine rights women should take advantage of.

1. The right to vote. The Nineteenth Constitutional Amendment was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920.

2. The right to make as much money as men. There are still many out there fighting for women to make the same higher wages as their male counterparts, but 1938’s Fair Labor Standards Act, which “established minimum wage without regard to sex,” made it possible for us to even be pissed about making less.

3. The right to have a “man’s” job. Sure, you had to be paid as much as the guys at work, but you could never, ever be promoted above one. At least not until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But it wasn’t until the 1973 Supreme Court upheld a 1968 ruling that sex-segregated ads for employment were made illegal.

4. The right to go to college. Back in the day, educating women wasn’t a priority. In 1870, just one-fifth of resident college and university students were women. Today, women outnumber men on college campuses.

5. The right to choose our own religion. Way back when, the religion of the man that you chose to marry is what you would convert to. No questions, no nothing. Even if you’re an atheist, you can appreciate this.

6. The right to own our own property. The first law that said it was permissible for a woman’s name to be listed on a deed came into effect in the middle 1800s. The catch? She had to have her husband’s permission to do so.

7. The right to choose to have children, or not. Everyone knows about the birth control movement of the seventies; the struggle started even earlier.

8. The right to work while pregnant. The 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act declared that a woman couldn’t be fired or denied a job or a promotion because she is, or may become, pregnant. It also stated that she couldn’t be forced to take pregnancy leave if she is willing and able to work.

9. The right to not have sex with our husbands. It wasn’t until 1976 that a law was established making it illegal for a husband to rape his wife. Enough said.

I agree with Alex. The comments are oddly hostile. The reason women should be grateful for these rights is precisely because they were NOT handed to us. Of course we inherently have a right to these things, but men denied us anyway. Women before us fought for these rights, making huge sacrifices so that we could have ownership of our property, our bodies and our suffrage. Even though things aren't perfect (we still don't get equal pay, for ex.), we at least have legal means to continue the fight. So I think the point is that we should be grateful to the women who came before us and blazed the trail, we shouldn't take the fruits of their labor for granted, because despite our inherent right to these things, we live with the risk we could lose them again.
I think that a fair amount of the people leaving comments here are COMPLETELY missing the point. The title is "Nine Things American Women take for granted." And frankly, the American populace has it pretty damn good compared to the rest of the world. Yes. Women SHOULD have those rights. But the vast majority (or at least a large percentage, I don't have numbers, nor do I have the inclination to find them) do not. I'm currently sitting in a country that a woman had to to marry her rapist in order to get out of being jailed for adultery.

What do you mean even atheists should appreciate that? How is it any less sexist and insulting for an atheist to be forced to worship ANY god than for a religious woman to be forced to worship a different god? You should really think about what audiences you may be alienating when you write that way.

Women still make less than men in nearly every industry. This is comparing men and women with the same amount of education and experience. My current and previous employers from paying me less than men doing the same job with less experience than me. I'm not basing the pay purely on my experience, rather I have done extensive research on gender pay inequality in the U.S. and the statistics don't lie. You really should remove this post because it is incorrect and offensive. While we have made progress, there are still inequalities. I should not have to be grateful for being allowed some of the most basic rights of men.

These things are not things that women take for granted. Women were entitled to them to begin with. What about men, aren't these things that men take for granted too?? Women have fought for their rights, they weren't simply handed to us. Get real.
It feels good to write.
