There are many things that I'm proud of. Among some of those things are: living on my own, supporting myself by holding down two jobs while trying to complete my education, being an American citizen and of my heritage.
Why is the stigma that you're considered a racist if you say you're proud to be White, yet it's more than "okay" to say that you're proud to be Black, Brown, or anything in between? I’m not saying I’m proud of the color of my skin, but rather proud of where I came from; the history of my family. We should all be able to say that we're proud of where we come from and what we've accomplished. Sure, we've all made mistakes in our history and our ancestors have also made errors and those are things we shouldn't be proud of, but instead learn from.
Being proud of my heritage does not make me a member of the KKK. I do not condone their doings or beliefs and believe they are wrong in their ways of thinking and doing.
This is such a touchy subject these days and I took much into consideration before writing this. I weighed the pros and cons and finally decided to speak my mind. Isn't that what being an American is about?
Ok, so back to the topic at hand. I am a hard-working college student who holds down two jobs just to support myself. Sure, pretty much everyone who goes to college has to take out a loan to pay for it. But, it would sure be nice if I had a little extra help. I find myself writing essays and searching for extra scholarships to help out with my financial burdens at school, and still not be guaranteed anything while certain “minorities” qualify for extra monies because they are Black, Indian, or other races. Why is it that there are no scholarships just for White people?
There is a month dedicated to Black History, parades to celebrate Gays and Lesbians, yet if I say I’m proud to be White I’m considered a member of the KKK, a Neo Nazi, or a racist. I just wonder why after all these years Whites are looked down on if they are proud of who they are and where they came from. Like I mentioned earlier, we should all take the good from what our ancestors did and learn from the bad. When will a day come that we will all have equal rights and be considered the same?
Why is it considered “humorous” when a Black, Asian, or Hispanic comedian jokes about a White person, but when a White person does the same he is considered a racist? Why is it that only Whites are considered racists?
The fact is that we are a less racist country today than we have EVER been in the history of our being. We have a BLACK president for the FIRST time in history who was voted in by….the AMERICAN PEOPLE! I myself am not a slave owner, nor do I condone what some of my ancestors may have done. But, the fact is that we’re a different generation than we were back then. Not only have Blacks been slaves, but at one point in time even Whites were slaves in Western Europe, along with Asians, Africans, and other Arab people. We’ve all been a slave at some time in our past history, but we should not let that define who we are today or use it as a crutch.
I hope you all would take a minute or two to ponder the idea of this blog. It was not meant to judge nor point fingers at anyone, but simply to shine a light on a situation that has gone on for too many years. It would sure be nice someday for it to be considered “acceptable” for me to be proud of who I am and where I came from as a White woman and not be considered a racist. You all should also take a look at your history and be proud of where your ancestors came from and learn from their mistakes.
