So tonight while having quality time with my parental units, we went for a drive around town. We drove from the area of town called the Highlands then downtown and into an area of town called Portland. Then into the area in which I live, called Germantown.
It was amazing to see how popular or unpopular the areas of town are. The areas where the city has poured in money to develop and areas that they haven’t. An area that was once the hub of this city, a bustling riverfront port, is now a run down busted up dump. It amazed me that people were living, or maybe just existing, in this area. Even in my area of town, parts of a street can go from a busted up area to a clean, fixed up area.
Even areas of downtown that have been cleaned up and renovated that once had a business in them are empty. Yes, the buildings still look good but they’re abandoned. Or it’s a hit or miss on the businesses. One may be doing well when right next door, one is gone.
I like the city I live in but driving tonight made me a little sad. To see the abandonment and the trash everywhere. Then to see where an area was thriving. I wish I had my camera to have captured it on film. I supposed I have lived a pretty sheltered life. Maybe I’ve just never paid attention. I just wanted to capture it all. This was the first time that I’ve had inkling as to what I’ve wanted to with my life.
