The Parade

The man stood beside the street,
the crowds gathered all around.
In the distance he could hear,
the horns sounding their glorious sound.

As the big parade grew closer,
and the crowds gathered in tight,
the procession crept slowly toward them,
as they struggled to see the sights.

Then the lead band suddenly appeared,
following a proudly displayed flag.
But the crowds continued shouting,
acting in a misbehaving way.

Then the man spotted an old soldier,
who slowly saluted as the flag passed by.
And the man thought he saw,
a tear in the old man’s eye.

How much had this old soldier suffered,
just so they could be there that day.
And the man slowly returned the old man’s salute,
proud to be a part of the great American way.
