Manhattan Dumpster Pools: Best Pools in NYC

Swimming in a dumpster—doesn’t that just sound fantastic? If you haven’t heard already, New York City Department of Transportation has teamed up with Macro Sea to create the ultimate in swimming experiences better known as “dumpster diving.”  That’s right; they have gathered tired rundown dumpsters from all across the land and reinvented them into handsome and well-appointed garbage pools. Well, maybe not rundown; the dumpsters donated by a local construction company were described as “new-ish,” but how subjective is the term “ish?”—especially when used in a construction-worker environment.

Nonetheless, this has happened, and for the past two weekends people have come in droves, some just to attend NYC’s Summer Streets festival, but many to embark on the journey of a lifetime—The 2010 Dumpster Dive Effect.

Maybe I’m just too narrow-minded but the thought of jamming ten people into a twenty-two foot dumpster pool does nothing for me. I’d rather spend the day in my friends cool luxury high-rise Manhattan apartment than make-believe dumpster diving.

In lieu of this whole dumpster shenanigans, I have comprised of a list of great pools around the NYC area. So stop swimming in dumpsters people. FIND A POOL!

Asser Levy Rec Center
This recreation center provides members classes all year around such as yoga, aerobics, Pilates, and other various skills. Equipped with two free to the public but use of its various other luxuries such as its indoor pool, basketball courts, billiards table, and an arts and crafts room cost an additional $75 per year for an adult.

Hamilton Fish Recreation Center
Located in the Lower East Side, the Hamilton Fish Recreation Center sports a gargantuan Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool that is open free to the public during the summer months.

Luxury New York City Apartment Complex
For those who can afford it, luxury New York City apartment properties often provide some of the nicest swimming pools in all of New York City. Take Glenwood for example, each of their New York City apartment buildings sports a state-of-the-art swimming pool.
