Help Mom This Mother’s Day

On May 10, people in about sixty different countries will be celebrating their mothers! Mother’s Day usually means a flood of Hallmark cards, flowers, and chocolates.

While these are given with the best of intentions, it’s worthwhile sparing a thought for mothers in developing nations. Chances are very few mothers in Darfur refugee camps will be receiving a great box of chocolates to munch on.

In fact, while women produce 60–80 percent of food in Africa and Asia, mothers are often the last to eat, rather saving their food for their children.

So, here’s an idea for Mother’s Day. As a gift to your mom, you could show her you care by donating to an organization that helps mothers in developing nations.

Research shows that for every extra year of education a girl receives, as a mother, her children's rate of mortality decreases by 10 percent.

There is a really great endeavor from the World Food Programme. They have a created a virtual Wall Against Hunger. You can write a message to your mother, share it with the world, have the message sent to your mom in an e-card format, and help another feed her child, all in one go.

Here’s another idea, pop over to care2.com. The Web site has made helping charities its business and there are a great many options for Mother’s Day there, too.
