Prosecco
Known as “Italy’s champagne,” prosecco (pro-seh-ko), the secret ingredient in Bellinis (a Bellini combines chilled prosecco and fresh white peach juice), is a straw-yellow sparkler that’s a terrific treat anytime. Its nose-tingling fizziness and white fruit nuances are gently balanced with low acidity, making any meal a celebration.

Mionetto, an Italian winemaker in the Veneto region, is a prosecco specialist. Mionetto offers a delightful selection of sparkling wines, from light frizzante to fragrant, mouth-filling food wines—there is a right one for any occasion, so let’s go!

1. Mionetto “IL” Prosecco: $11 for 750ml or $7 for 375ml Made from 100% prosecco grapes grown in Alta Marca Trevigiana, in the province of Treviso, this straw-colored frizzante (lightly sparkling) prosecco sports ripe pear dashed with floral overtones. The clean, crisp body packs bright, white fruit and pairs snappy citrus liveliness with palate-cleansing freshness. Made in a traditional style, it is terrific as an aperitif or with light fare such as grilled fish, chicken, or veggies.

2. Mionetto Prosecco Brut: $11 Intense peach on the nose, pale yellow to the eyes, and citrusy golden apple on the palate, this well-balanced bubbly is great on its own or with light bites. Take it along to the park or picnic. It’s a match with mild cheese, chips & whipped dips, prosciutto & melon, and simple sandwiches.

3. Mionetto Sergio Spumante, Extra Dry: $17 Splendidly dry with a touch of Asian pear and crunchy Granny Smith apple, it’s a delicate blend of 70 percent Prosecco di Valdobbiadene DOC and 30 percent mixed Verdiso, Bianchetta, and Chardonnay. The winemaker, Sergio Mionetto, produces this rich bubbly based on a formula handed down by Francesco Mionetto, who founded the winery in 1887. This Spumante is wonderful paired with a baby spinach, pear, and walnut salad; or roasted halibut, oysters, baked chicken, creamy bisques, and fruit-based desserts.

4. Mionetto Valdobbiadene DOC: $20 dollars Made from grapes harvested from vineyards along the Cartizze border, this 100% Prosecco di Valdobbiadene DOC premier cru exudes exotic tropical fruit aromas melded with crunchy green apple and Anjou pear. Its elegant, creamy softness is wonderful with braised Dover sole, sautéed chicken, polenta, quiche, and buttery pastries.

5. Mionetto Cartizze: $29 Mionetto’s top-of-the-line, limited-production bubbly is crafted from 100% Prosecco Superiore Di Cartizze DOC grapes grown in the steep hills of the Valdobbiadene region. Mellow, fragrant, and fruity—it shines with shellfish, sushi, and slightly spicy dishes. It’s a perfect after-dinner partner when served with aged cheese, pastries, and fruit tarts.
