I should have known that Secondhand Lions was written by Tim McCanlies, who also wrote Iron Giant.  I left the theatre with that same feeling.  That feeling that something is right with the world after all.  I have a strong suspicion that you may read some derisive reviews about Secondhand Lions.  Don't fall for it.   This is a feel-good story and often feel-good stories get hit the hardest for being unrealistic, Pollyanna, and saccharine.  However, you figure this movie has got to have some weight to it with the likes of Michael Caine and Robert Duvall in it.  These two must have had a kick playing the roles of Uncle Garth and Uncle Hub respectively.  These guys are rough old codgers with mysterious stories of adventures and treasure in their past.  We meet them next to Walter (Haley Joel Osment) as his Mom is hoisting him off onto his uncles.  Actually, they aren't even so close as uncles, they are Walter's great-uncles.  When Walter discovers there are no phones or televisions, he's convinced he's been left at the worst place on earth.  As it turns out, Walter's uncles will provide more than enough entertainment for his entire stay.   I couldn't have asked for more enjoyable or better performances from Caine and Duvall.  They had me smiling widely with their antics.  Only the looks between them would make you think that these two are brothers.  There's just something a little too different about them visually for me to believe it.  But, that said, everything else about Caine & Duvall had me hooked.  Joel Haley Osment was convincing.  Joel is at that awkward pre-teen molting stage of life, however, and a bit of that awkwardness shows in this role and his acting.  However, for the role of Walter - it's perfectly suited.   There is a point where Hub says emphatically to Walter: "Damn it! If you want to believe in something, then believe in it! Just because something isn’t true, that’s no reason you can’t believe in it!"  Not only is this the God's honest truth about life, faith and hope -- but it's the God's honest truth about this movie.  Go believing in it.

A good book keeps you reading until the end. A great book pulls you completely into the story, so much so that you can’t talk or think about anything else. Which book would you put in the latter category? Which changed your perspective the most? Write about it. >>
