Skiing

No sport may be as adversely affected by global warming as skiing. This year, the earth’s rising temperature has produced a woeful season; on a recent trip to Tahoe, I found myself snowboarding over puddles. So, it makes sense that many ski resorts are doing their damndest to decrease energy consumption and get green before their livelihood melts before their eyes.

One of these is Alpine Meadows. It was recently given an “A” by an environmental coalition that rates Western ski resorts. Alpine offsets 100% of its energy use by purchasing renewable wind energy and all of their food service and office paper is made from recyclable material. And it has some really great terrain. Even though skiing is not the earth-friendliest sport out there—most people drive to resorts, which are built by clear-cutting large swaths of forest—at least we can support the ones that are trying to make a difference.

A good book keeps you reading until the end. A great book pulls you completely into the story, so much so that you can’t talk or think about anything else. Which book would you put in the latter category? Which changed your perspective the most? Write about it. >>
