Hats and Things

A birthday phone call to my father reminds me of how life works. He had a great day searching for the right hat that he envisions to be the ultimate birthday gift for himself. He describes it as having a flappy demeanor, covering all of his head (yet he believes none would fit, as his head must be larger than what he anticipated), and be correct in terms of the size, color, and style he prefers at his age.

As he pursues his hat destiny, it made think of birthdays past. When you are seventy-four years old (an antique as my father calls himself), wouldn’t it be nice to find the right “hat” in life? We all wear them in life—for days and years. They don’t always fit, as my father describes, in the way we are comfortable with. It is not an epidemic worldwide, yet a longing to fit in from our own perception.

Through my recent conversations with friends, it is a similar story to time and the simple hat we wear daily. Many of us want to wear more than one throughout our day, fulfilling our wishes, dreams, and hopes … searching for what make us successful. To find that hat takes focus, determination, patience, and a swipe of good luck.

I believe this birthday hat search is similar to the life-long journey we all experience. The undaunting mystery of what hat we choose to fill, comparably to the hat we see on sale on the store shelf .It is the one hat in life we see in our mind that makes all the difference.
