The Town Supervisor and the Toll

What could a toll be when there is no one to tell you the consequence for traveling? He introduces himself to me as the “Town Supervisor” as he greets and meets me, shakes my hand with desired diligence, and smiles with that political yet polite thing. His wife is at the end of the dock (as I know) and certainly respect. She’s a peach.

On the supers way back as I lay curiously in the hot sun as he asks me, “Is there a toll to pass?” I answered him, “no, it’s just me getting up and out of your way.” Later on, I did think about this. How many other ways could I have answered that question? The actual meaning got in my intellectual personal way in general. A time to think about a toll I maybe haven’t paid.

I think if there was a personal toll to speak of in life, it would be of course a self-induced charge to your individual account, banking experiences let’s say of our day to day life. The toll could be without charge, yet it wouldn’t come with a price or, let’s say a life experience to speak of to learn from.

The toll could be food, water, air, or the obvious visual without thought impairment on a dock on a wonderfully sunny sarcastic day in New York. Maybe the toll should be an exchange of not words, just a pass. The pass could be non-verbal and selectively and sincerely traded for the allowance to go through on it’s own merit. The Easy Pass system . . . almost too easy yet it is accepted in our society.

If I had to charge a toll for life experiences, I would suspect I may possibly ask this question upon passing; “What is your purpose? “ I believe most people would have no answer. It is something to think about when going through your daily tolls in life. You know the answer.

The next time I asked about a toll, my thoughts will possibly direct me to not pay it forward, yet think about the present opportunity to see things for what they are.
