The Gift of Cancer

Last year at this time I was in the middle of chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, stage 3. I am a different person these days. I learned so much for my cancer journey that I now realize what a gift that was at age 56. I learned to love myself with a bald head, taught myself to love deeply, and to view everyday as the best day of my life.

While the treatments were the hardest thing I have ever done in my life – I did something extraordinary – I survived. I also learned some powerful messages that I needed to take heed of. Let me share what I learned from my gift of cancer.

1. FAMILY is #1. No, it is not the JOB.

2. Prayer is powerful. Don’t be afraid to ask this of others who believe.

3. A support team of family and friends is essential when in times of crisis. Be of help to others and you will learn more about yourself in the process.

4. Silence and stillness can be good things when you listen to your inner self. Just stop and listen. Be still.

5. Always be humble. Remember to say “thank you” to everyone.

6. Be kind to others and they will return in kind.

7. Give hugs daily. Cancer patients need hugs, don’t be afraid.

8. Enjoy everyday. Don’t take it for granted. Enjoy God’s gifts.

9. Keep it simple. Having too much stuff creates stress.

10. Attitude is everything.

11. Put myself first – not last. Take care of my health and rest.

12. I am strong and capable of doing extraordinary things.

Cancer gave me the opportunity to reassess my life – to shift priorities – to LIVE. I am thankful.

Thank you for passing on these empowering messages. You are a gift to the rest of us. We take life, as crazy as it is on most days, for granted whether we mean to or not. When given a life altering diagnosis or have a loved one pass on, your views change. My mother passed away from ovarian cancer 2 1/2 years ago after a 5 year fight and my father was recently diagnosed w/colon cancer. Family IS #1. Without them, this road through life would be isolated and dark. Rock on...

My daughter has stage 3C breast cancer at 38 and as a family we have become closer and have experienced many blessings. It has been a journey that wasn't wanted, asked for or expected, but an amazing road being traveled. God's blessings to you.
