Consumerism: When Is Enough, Enough?

This is one of my favorite social commentary videos o’ mine. I go back to this a lot because the culture of New York City is steeped in consumerism and having all the coolest toys. Everything in our capitalist society seems geared to owning crap. Buying stuff. Stimulating the economy by working really hard at a company that is selling something to someone, so you can earn money to buy the stuff that another company is making. This is really the premise of our consumerist popular culture. Ain’t it grand? Ain’t it spiritually awakened? I’m so tired of being made to feel like I need to buy something.

LOL I found a cure!!! I never thought I was a shopoholic until I had to move. Unopened shopping bags and unexpected "discovery" of stuff I didn't know I owned. Then the pain of packing... massive! Given away bags and bags of clothes and I still have 3 large closet-full of clothes yet to be packed. How can that be??? Not to mention the labor and shipping costs. It took the third move in 3 years to transform my addictive habit. The labor pain of moving wore me out eventually. Now I will not buy an item until I make a point to return to the store to get it.

Hilarious!!!! I don't want any more stuff, either! I just downsized from a large four bedroom house to a downtown one-bedroom condo, and I feel like I can breathe again! Except that I still have to empty the house of the extra stuff....
