Overcoming the Odds

It’s no secret. I’m an extremely organized person. In fact, most people would consider me completely anal-retentive ... and that’s fine. It’s what keeps me focused and ready for the next challenge in life. So, it should come as no surprise that I’m a big fan of New Years resolutions. Actually, I’m a big fan of always having goals, regardless of the day of the year. But if implementing those goals on January first helps you get organized and motivated for the upcoming year, then so be it.

As a self-professed goal master (sounds like some sort of hockey term), I have some tips that may help you become a little more resolute about your newly-formed resolutions.

1. Don’t underestimate your potential.
Make your resolutions challenging, but also reasonable. You’d be amazed at what you can accomplish when you remain focused and organized. Base everything off the situation at the present time. For example, don’t plan to purchase a $1,000,000 home with the funds coming from a winning lottery ticket. I’ve played that game before, and it doesn’t work.

2. Manage your progression and achievement.
Break down your goals into manageable bites. If you have multiple goals for the upcoming year, don’t start all of them at once. Complete one goal and then move on to the next. Also, establish some sort of reward system so you can treat yourself to a job well done.

3. Tell someone.
Accountability is very important. Why do you think those weight watchers classes are so popular? No one wants to tell a room full of people about the huge California burrito they ate moments before class began. If someone is holding you accountable for your actions, you behave differently. Plus, you may need the emotional support if you start to lose motivation.

What other strategies have helped you achieve your New Years resolutions?
