Alaska: The Odds Are Still Good and the Goods Are Still Odd

It is winter in Alaska again and it was another Saturday night, and I was having the same conversation with the same friend as my last story. Nothing seems to have changed, there are still thousands of men on the dating sites (although I confess, after my last try in the summer of 2008, I have not checked out any). I am relying on the word of my friend who is now trying out a senior site. Same challenge: getting someone who is looking for a woman with intelligence, independence, etc., etc., to reply to your inquiry. A few of my platonic male friends (all over fifty) are dating midtwenty-something women and worrying, Will they still need me, will they still feed me, when I'm sixty-four? As for me, I have settled in to my singlehood quite nicely. At sixty-one, I took a motorcycle course and obtained my license after twenty-seven years of not riding. I plan to buy a motorcycle in the spring and already have the leather chaps and accessories. Most of the students in my class were young, hot and hotshot military guys, and when a few of them did not pass the two-day course and I did, I shouted, “GO GRANDMA!” I got my first tattoo (ouch); it is located above my heart. It is a mother polar bear with two babies (which represents my two children and me), the Alaskan northern lights, the moon (the circle of life), and four stars representing my four grandchildren. I love it. I’m taking a trip in December to Central America and planning a motorcycle trip to Nova Scotia ... Oh, there are times when I wish I had a man with rhythm to go out dancing with, or even to be a little romantic with (give me, give me a man after midnight) but then I remember the sunburns of love, the “burrs on the butt” in most intimate relationships and the fact that my Facebook “felt age” is currently thirty-something. I figure I have another thirty years before I need to start seeking male for companionship and sex on the senior site! So, this long winter, I will enjoy my quiet time with the snow-covered mountains in my backyard and save “the odds are good but the goods are odd” for those twenty-something women who may need a man more than me!
