Dating and Intelligence

I happen to be a big fan of Charles Darwin and his theories on evolution and natural selection in relationship to the mating process. The bottom line is, as a woman, I’m going to pick a man who appears to be the best choice for providing a healthy offspring.

Which brings me to the topic of dating and intelligence. I consider “smarts” to be on the top of my list of what attracts me to a man, along with the ability to help me take the cap off a jar—or at least offer to help me take the cap off.

Lately I have been getting asked out by men that are sweet but not on the same wave-length as me. Okay, that’s a nice way of saying, “not the sharpest knife in the kitchen drawer.”

It got me thinking about this topic … this one guy has really pursued me hard, and just last week he sent me an e-mail asking me out, while also commenting on a blog post I recently posted where I had embedded video from National Geographic about harmonious hippos and crocs.

Somehow the aforementioned guy thought I had shot that on a recent video shoot here in Southern California, even referring to the local beach, yes I said “beach,” where I had shot my “close encounter” with wild African animals!

It took me a few days to even respond to his e-mail as I was so completely turned off, not just on a emotional level, but deep down in my gut, on what I’m certain was a hormonal level. I told this story to a few of my girlfriends, and I can honestly say that they had the same deep-seated and emotional response as I.

I think, as we get older, the idea of sitting at the breakfast or dinner table with a man that stimulates your brain—and not just your vagina—day after day speaks volumes on the deeper meanings of our hormones and attraction. Perhaps it has taken me getting to my forties to realize that I will date a man with a fantastic brain long before I will date a man just based on his looks and that beauty is really only skin deep.

What do you think? Is beauty really only skin deep, and have you ever dated based on looks, fame, or money, with no “intelligence” attraction?
