Is Your Boyfriend Only After Your Money?

Baby-boomer women are a prime target for unscrupulous men who view them as easy prey. They find women who have reached their boomer years and are financially set. The unsuspecting women have usually inherited money from family or received a comfortable divorce settlement.

To be sure, there are many men out there searching for a genuine relationship based on love and companionship. But how can you be sure that the man you’re dating is after your heart and not your wallet?

Here are some techniques men have used to get you to part with your money:

  • He takes you out to expensive places and buys small but costly gifts. He insists on paying for everything. This guy is a smooth operator. He’s out to win your trust. Let down your guard and when the time is right, he’ll get your money and disappear.
  • He suggests expensive places for dates and always has some story about his money being tied up. Divorce settlement, retirement package, and trust fund are just a few. He suggests that you pay and assures you that as soon as his money is “released,” everything will be his treat. Don’t fall for it; suggest a romantic dinner at home and see what happens.
  • You might find your date trying to peek at your ATM receipt or a bank statement that you’ve inadvertently left on your desk. This is a sure sign that he’s interested in knowing your financial worth. The time to discuss your financial situation is when the relationship becomes serious and you intend to become a “couple.” Until then, it’s your business and not his.
  • Another clue is that he’s rushing you into marriage or wants to move into your home long before the relationship is ripe. He might offer good reasons such as the lease being up on his apartment, spending much more time together, or sharing living expenses. Be careful of this one. Check out his living quarters. A man who owns a luxury condo might not be so anxious to give up his living space. Another caveat is that he might be renting that condo, not owning it.

Studies show that women fare better than men living alone. Men don’t make friends as easily and don’t confide their feelings even to family members. They, too, can be suspicious about a relationship and wonder if your feelings are genuine.

So as you begin dating, enjoy, have fun, but keep up your guard until time proves if he is everything he appears to be.
