World’s Ten Safest Countries to Visit

Do nightmares of instability or violent political upheaval keep you awake at night? Do you shutter at the thought of having your wallet brutally taken from you in a seemingly quiet train station? Do you yearn to travel, but fret over the possibility of a military invasion by a hostile neighbor, or a horrific terrorist attack running your well-laid plans?

Well fear not, worrywarts. Jittery travelers can use good old fashioned statistical analysis to determine the likelihood of such unpleasant occurrences taking place while abroad. Uneasy travelers can mitigate risk by consulting the Global Peace Index prior to choosing their next destination and select a country that can arguably be called one of the ten safest places on Earth to visit.

10. Slovenia
A surprise entry rounding out the top ten, this former Yugoslav republic has transitioned well into the world following the fall of Communism and the Yugoslav Civil War. Wedged between Italy, Austria, Croatia, and Hungry, this tiny mountainous nation has experienced a history of dominance by foreign empires. Picturesque alpine villages and great skiing make this nation a hidden gem of European tourism, while boasting low levels of violent crime and being little risk from terrorist attacks. 9. Finland
The final Nordic nation on the list, Finland is considered one of the most stable countries in the world based on economic, political, social and military indicators. Much like neighboring Sweden the landscapes are pristine and forested, and Finland’s cities are modern and progressive. Here you can experience the nation’s rich folk culture in a land where day lasts all night in the summer months. Finland actually boasts a slightly higher homicide rate per 100,000 people than many other nations on this list; however a strong respect for civil liberties, the democratic process and human rights make Finland another safe bet for travelers. 8. Canada
Despite popular conceptions, the “Great White North” is actually an overwhelmingly urban nation with almost 80 percent of the population residing in cosmopolitan and diverse cities. As a nation of immigrants, the government pursues a policy of multiculturalism where citizens are encouraged to maintain their traditional values and ways of life. Canada scores well for its appreciation of human rights and tolerance. While Canada also scores well for low levels of violent crime, it loses points for a greater ease of access to weapons “of minor destruction.” Canada is also considered a more probable target for a terrorist attack based on the nation’s participation in the War in Afghanistan and strong ties with the United States and Great Britain. new zealand safe?? yeah semi maybe..one of the safest in the world for adventure tourism yes, that adds up to nothing among the babies being put in clothes dryers and murdered, the homeless being beaten to death in public parks, several bodies being found under the house of a man, foreign taxi drivers being murdered, exchange students being severely beaten, binge drinking that results in VERY intense domestic violence and sexual abuse, severe racism, coward politicians who back down to the maori iwi's claiming land that do not belong to them, the government wanting to sell our most prized lands to foreign investors, disgusting aroma of sulphur in the air which rots through jewelery so imagine what it does to our lungs and not to mention the highly untrained, egotistical police who get away with highly intoxicated driving and irresponsibly shooting and killing an innocent young man on the road, power-tripped school teachers who refuse to help students who have difficulty reading..

Aboriginal needs to be looked up in the dictionary, Kakalina. The word means "Native" and has nothing to do with the natives of Australia except a title used to denote a native population. The word as you may note in the article is not capitalized "aboriginal" "Maori" is capitalized. In other words, the use is perfectly correct when speaking about a native population. My husband is Navajo Indian, an American aboriginal person. There are aboriginal forests. I don't have a negative reaction to the word, nor can I understand why any intelligent person would. Great article by the way! Wonder why all the safe place are in "cold climate" countries except New Zealand?

Great article. It struck me that all the places mentioned were in colder climates (except New Zealand). I wonder if that's something we might think about. Warmer climates more likely to be more volatile? I wonder. Also, I am really surprised that a comment was made about the use of the word aboriginal. I realize in Australia, the Aboriginal people are not popular and looked down upon. The word aboriginal is used correctly describing a Native, or First or Earliest Dweller. My native American husband, Alex, is Navajo, but also an aboriginal. There are even aboriginal forests, which has nothing to do with Australia. Look the word up before you start ranting about offensive and ignorant.
It feels good to write.
