Bizarre Hotels Made from Found Objects
Airstream Penthouse Trailer Park - Cape Town South Africa
Claiming to be the only rooftop penthouse trailer park hotel, these stylish accommodations certainly win points for originality. Seven Airstream trailers situated on the roof top of the Grand Daddy Hotel are luxuriously appointed in seven different themes.
Wagon Stays - Christchurch, New Zealand
The early settlers of the 1870s would have never imagined their covered wagons used as a luxury hotel rooms. Wagon Stays Hotel has meticulously appointed an authentic covered wagon complete with air conditioning, heating, LCD TV and, of course, a kerosene lantern. wagonstays.co.nz.
Hotel Costa - Verde Quepos, Costa Ri
The newest room at this resort is a two-bedroom suite built within a revamped 727 Boeing airplane from 1965. The plane suite is also perched on a pedestal that puts inhabitants at tree level, offering amazing views and safe interaction with nature. The effect is similar to a plane crashing into a tree, but more peaceful than terrifying.
Capsule Hotel - The Hague, Netherlands
For those who enjoy claustrophobic sleep settings, this hotel of former “survival crafts” is the perfect place. The interior is pretty bare bones—a hammock is really all that can fit in there, though the pricier capsules offer sheepskin for blankets and toilets.
Sand Hotel - Weymouth Beach, Dorset, UK
People like building sand castles and sleeping under the stars … maybe they’ll love sleeping in a roofless sand castle, too! At least that’s what the creator of this hotel must’ve thought. The rooms are cheap and conveniently located on the beach, but be warned—sand knows no boundaries on bodies. Also, there aren’t bathrooms, but the ocean’s just a few feet away.
Jules Undersea Lodge - Key Largo, Florida
Ever have the urge to spend the night in an underwater research habitat? I know I do. Luckily there’s the Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida. Two modestly appointed rooms require guests to dive down 21 feet to the entrance, packing their belongings in airtight suitcases. Scuba certification required upon check-in, no smoking.
Winvian - Litchfield Hills, Connecticut
A helicopter-themed cottage is one of the numerous options available for rent here. The refurbished, 17,000-pound transportation device comes with various buttons and lights that allow guests to simulate a real flight.
Dasparkhotel - Ottensheim, Austria
The hotel calls their residences a “temporary, comfortable, uncomplicated home.” That’s a much nicer way of saying that they’re old sewage pipes that are only big enough for a bed. On the plus side, the hotel’s located in the middle of a park, so at least there’s pretty scenery beyond the drain pipe wall.
Controversy Tram Hotel - Hoogwoud, the Netherlands
Made of trams from Germany and Amsterdam, these suites offer all the amenities of a standard hotel, but with a colorful setting and unique interior decorating as bonuses. Most other places don’t have old tires as sinks, but that’s the beauty of the Controversy.
Hotel im Wasserturm - Cologne, Germany
Once the biggest water tower in Europe, this is now an official heritage site and a luxury hotel. The Web site assures its readers that using a tower makes people feel protected, not confined. Regardless, I think they should put pictures of the rooms out front, ’cause the exterior doesn’t exactly scream “a good night’s sleep.”
