This delicious recipe was one of my mother’s (Elzora Wynn) signature dishes.
3 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/8 cup of milk
Combine dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add egg and milk all at once. Mix until dough forms a ball. Turn dough onto lightly floured board and knead 10 to 12 times. Roll out to 3/4-inch thickness. Cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. (You can also use a small, well-floured glass.) Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 475 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
